by registered letter that the Council has received such notification, and shall enquire of her whether she desires to show cause why her name should not also be removed from the Register, and if no answer is received by the Registrar within such time as the Council may consider reasonable, having regard to the registered address of the said nurse, or if the nurse replies that she does not desire to show cause as aforesaid, then the Council shall at its next convenient meeting direct the Registrar to remove such nurse's name from the Register; but if the said nurse replies within such reasonable time that she does desire to show cause as aforesaid, it shall be the duty of the Registrar to lay the matter before the Disciplinary and Penal Cases Committee, and the said Committee shall report to the Council whether in their opinion she has shown sufficient cause as aforesaid. If the Council on receiving said report consider that sufficient cause has been shown, they shall proceed to rehear the case in the same manner as herein before pro- vided in this Rule. The result of the Council's finding shall be in due course notified to the nurse and to the General Nursing Council for England and Wales, or the Joint Nursing and Midwives Council (Northern Ireland), as the case may be.

28. (1) When a nurse has been removed from the Register altogether under these Rules, any application for restora- tion to the Register shall be made in writing addressed to the Registrar and signed by the applicant, stating the grounds on which the application is made.

(2) The application shall contain the names and addresses of two or more persons, of whom two shall be either Justices of the Peace, Ministers of Religion, registered Medical Practi- tioners, or Registered Nurses, able and willing to identify the applicant and give evidence as to her character, and the nature of her employment, both before and since the date of her removal, and such other evidence as the Council may require.

(3) The Council may require the applicant to verify by a statutory declaration or otherwise any statement made in her application or any further statement which they may think necessary, and may, if they think fit, require the applicant to attend in person at a meeting of the Council or of any Committe of the Council at which the matter is to be considered.

(4) If upon consideration of the application, and of the evidence furnished in support of it, the Council are satisfied that the name of the applicant should be restored to the Register, they may direct the Registrar accordingly, and upon pay- ment by the applicant of a fee of 10s. her name shall be reincluded in the appropriate part or parts of the Register, and a new certificate shall be issued to her.

29. In the event of notice being received by the Council from the General Nursing Council for England and Wales or from the Joint Nursing and Midwives Council (Northern Ireland) that they have restored to their Register the name of a nurse resident in England, Wales, or Ireland respectively, whose name they had removed from their Register, if the Registrar shall find that the name of such nurse was removed from the Council's Register, it shall be the duty of the Registrar to lay the matter before the Disciplinary and Penal Cases Committee, who shall then consider the matter, and if they consider it necessary make enquiries, and report to the Council, who shall, if they think fit, having regard to all the circumstances, and at their discretion, likewise restore the name of such nurse to the Register, if she applies under and conforms to such of the pro- visions of Rule 28 as the Council may require. The result of the Council's finding shall in due course be notified to the General Nursing Council for England and Wales or the Joint Nursing and Midwives Council (Northern Ireland), as the case may be, and also to the nurse.

The Act means the Nurses Registration (Scotland) Act, 1919.

The Council means the General Nursing Council for Scotland

established under Section I. of the Act.

"The Register means the Register of Nurses formed and kept

by the Council under Section 2 of the Act.

"The Registrar " means the person for the time being appointed to act as Registrar of the Council under Section 4 of the Act, and includes any person duly authorised to act and acting on his behalf.
